Electrochemical H2 Production using Polypyrazole based Zinc(II) Complex in Alkaline Medium

A zinc(II) complex of polypyazole containing ligand namely, [Tp*ZnCl] (Zn1) {Tp* = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate}, along with its bound hydroxo [Tp*Zn–OH] (Zn2) were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, Raman, 1H NMR techniques elemental analysis. In alkaline solution (0.1 M KOH), the Zn2 modified glassy carbon (GC), namely GC–Zn2, was investigated as a molecular electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Different quantities (ca. 0.1–0.5 mg cm–2) loaded on GC electrodes to make various GC–Zn2 electrodes. These utilized cathodes in 0.1 KOH produce H2 using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) measurements. The HER electrocatalytic activity catalyst found be quite high it increased loading density. top performing electrocatalyst, (0.5 cm–2), demonstrated considerable catalytic performance low onset potential (EHER) –33 mV vs. RHE exchange current density 0.59 mA cm–2. Moreover, had Tafel slope –152 dec–1 consumed an overpotential 135 generate 10 Under same operating conditions, these electrochemical kinetic parameters not remarkably far from those determined commercial Pt/C (–10 RHE, 0.88 cm–2, 108 110 yield cm–2). addition, most active electro-catalysts production aqueous electrolytes comparable reported here electrocatalyst. Using 5000 cycles repetitive cyclic 48 h chronoamperometry measurements, best electrocatalyst’s stability long term durability tested. It exhibited activity.

We report on the electrochemical alteration of a nickel(II) bis-glyoximato complex into nickel-based nanoparticles at a glassy carbon electrode under acid reducing conditions. These particles show electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen production at +410 mV compared to the bare glassy carbon electrode. Mechanistic insights are discussed based on DFT calculations.
